The U.S. Post Office has announced they are considering closing the north Topeka Processing and Distribution facility, eliminating approximately 150 jobs here.  This facility processes and distributes mail for a large area of northeast Kansas and in most cases first class mail is delivered in one day.  With the elimination of this operation in Topeka, first class mail delivery within the district will be 2 - 3 days, maybe more.  Mail will be shipped to Kansas City, Missouri, to be processed then back to the Topeka area for delivery.

Local businesses that currently receive overnight mail at the Processing and Distribution facility to internally process within their operations will see significant delays and changes in pick up times.  Businesses that rely on access to mail services throughout the day will also experience change.  In order to receive discounts now available to businesses and non-profits who deliver their mail to the north Topeka facility, discounts  (but not necessarily the same amount) will be available to those who transport their mail to the Missouri facility.  Mail access and delivery changes will impact companies who have time sensitive mailings of documents, statements, payments, etc.
